FLYING high in Bury! That's a special Employer training Pilot (ETP) scheme which is improving literacy and numeracy skills of workforces in the borough.
And Minister for Skills and Vocational Education Ivan Lewis was the guest at a Celebration of Success event staged by Bury College's Business Solutions. The Bury South MP presented ETP awards to a number of successful companies which have embraced the key initiative.
Business Solutions stress that poor literacy and numeracy skills throughout the UK costs industry £4.8 billion a year.. Employer Training Pilots were established to help the industry workforce improve deficiencies in level two and basic skills of employees.
Carol McKenzie, director of development at Bury College, said: "We have been successful in supporting more than 500 employees through the ETP scheme to achieve work-related qualifications and skills."
Business Solutions have worked directly with employers to focus on assessing employees' existing skills, establishing requirements and fitting training to meet those needs. Employees have been allowed time off work to train for their qualifications.
