WHEN Whitefield and District Flower Club met on February 21, the demonstrator, Beryl Cotton's theme was "Castles in the Air".
Her first was a basket of spring flowers. For the centre she used contorted willow branches surrounded by forsythia, blue iris, yellow roses and on a lower level, blue hyacinths, yellow tulips and daffodils.
A very simple modern design was next. Consisting of large bleached branches grouped in a row on a flat base, the branches had test tubes on the upper parts hidden by leaves into which white eucharis lilies were displayed.
Her next display was a boat- shaped container filled with a stralitzia and two leaves for sails.Pink protea, aspidistra leaves, yellow orchids and yellow arum lilies were clustered around the base of the stralitzia. There was a second one making two sail boats. An urn on a pedestal with phormium tenax leaves, stunning red lilies, red and pink orchids, pink roses and bay leaves for the greenery, gave a very majestic design.
A square pewter container was next, containing black dogwood stems, large green chrysanthemums, white lilies, the palest green flowers surrounded by senecio and rosemary, and yellow cymbidium orchids cascading over the edge.
Her last design, a tall stand, displayed large palm leaves and monstera leaves, with banksias, five red exotic lilies, stralitzias and bronze anthuriums.
Excellent flowers, great designs and interesting conversation made this a great evening.
