THE letter "The problem with speed cameras is that they simply don't work" (February 25), is far from accurate. It has been proven that speed cameras do save up to a minimum of 100 lives per year.
These figures can be produced by RoadPeace and Brake charities, which are campaigning for road safety.
Also, the letter stated that it was drivers only doing a few miles over the limit who are most likely to be penalised.
Does the gentleman not realise that drivers travelling at only a few miles over the speed limit kill hundreds of people every year throughout Britain?
We feel that anyone who appreciates the dangers on the roads and sticks to a safe speed limit will have nothing to fear from these cameras.
Last Sunday evening, February 27, the anniversary of our child's death, we were holding a candlelit vigil at the accident blackspot, when we were passed by an idiot driving at 80mph, on Bolton Road. Can you imagine how that felt?
Please do not criticise speed cameras, we might all need them one day.
