I was pleased to see a letter published from one of the local residents regarding the extension of the Jubilee Centre on the Lido Park. I also believe we should draw attention to the actions of the council with regard to this matter.

Two similar applications for smaller extensions to the Jubilee Centre had been refused as it was considered improper development in green belt and would be detrimental to the amenities of the residents. Nothing has changed since then. The recommendation of the planning department was to refuse this application, but instead the councillors chose to approve, in spite of objections from every resident.

It would seem that if you are prepared to spend enough money on architects and consultants you can by-pass regulations regarding building on green belt land.

Let's not forget this is also a park which the council hold in trust for all the people of the borough, not just the over-50s. I have a young family who use the park regularly to play in safety. With the housing development on the site of the old Bury General Hospital, there will be even more young families who need this park. If the extension goes ahead there will be increased danger to the children in particular because of the hazard of parked cars. The car park provided is seldom used by the staff or visitors to the centre, who choose to park on the street instead.

I know that Age Concern do good work in the community, but in this case they have used their influence as a charity to persuade the council. As a resident I have written to the council several times expressing my concerns, but as yet have not had any replies. I get the impression they want to sweep it under the carpet.

I urge anyone who is concerned about our parks and green belt land, to contact the council and voice your opinions. We live in a highly residential area and there is little enough parkland as it is. If the council allow this development, they set a precedent for other developments on green belt land. Dont let them spoil what we've got.
