VILLAGERS today spoke of their shock after a resident was stabbed and his wife arrested on suspicion of murder.

John Lesley Parker, 58, of Gregson Lane, Hoghton, died early on Friday after an incident at his home at 7pm the previous day.

His wife Elaine, 58, was arrested but was later released on bail until June pending further police inquiries.

Mr Parker, a welder and dishwasher repairman, was today described as a very sociable man who lived life to full and was often seen in the village's pubs.

The Blackburn Rovers fan, who would go to games with his wife, is believed to have returned home from a pub shortly before the stabbing.

He was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital for emergency surgery on a stab wound to his stomach but did not survive the operation.

Mrs Parker, who is believed to work for the Inland Revenue, was arrested on Thursday but and bailed on Friday.

Police have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with Mr Parker's death.

Coun James Marsh, who knew the couple, said: "None of us can believe that has happened.

"John was the salt of the earth and a very sociable animal, well known in the Old Oak and Mill Tavern.

"If Rovers won they would come in the pub, if they lost they sometimes didn't.

"He was very sociable and had a drink, whereas Elaine would usually have a cup of coffee

"We have lost a good friend in John. He was top of the league, socially. He was a smashing bloke and would do anything for you.

We are all upset and will be turning up for the funeral."

The couple's home in Gregson Lane appeared empty yesterday.

A resident, who did not want to be named, said: "She is staying with her brother. Everyone is in shock."
