I CANNOT let this opportunity pass without paying tribute to Dr Ian Gavin who has so tragically died (LET, March 3) leaving so many people who knew him wondering why this should have happened to such a caring person and dedicate doctor.
He came to Accrington and took over the Medical Practice of the late Dr Campbell, in Avenue Parade, Accrington, round about 1955 or 56.
From the very start, until his retirement from Peel House Medical Centre, he cared for young and old alike, not only medically but with kindness and understanding.
On quite a few occasions Dr Gavin made Sunday morning visits to our home because he was concerned about a member of our family.
In fact my husband and myself regarded him not only as our family doctor, but as a friend; especially as in 1986 he agreed to speak and propose a toast on the occasion of my husband's inauguration as Mayor of Hyndburn.
I am sure all past patients of Dr Ian Gavin will agree he will always be remembered as a genuine, sincere and well respected person who will be sadly missed.
JEAN DICKINSON, Dill Hall Lane, Church, Accrington.
