LANCASTER City councillors say that they have 'fully thought out' their solution to the Morecambe South Road problem. I can only conclude that they don't have a common sense thought between them!
Closing any road is a drastic step, bringing many unwanted and potentially dangerous knock-on effects.
Do they not know that most of the moronic speedsters on our roads show only five minutes' remorse when they (inevitably) have an accident? That's remorse for themselves.
They hate the predicament they have put themselves in, feeling annoyed only that they are inconvenienced, and forget any damage they cause, even to innocent people.
And with a replacement car, or repairs at the expense of their insurers, they'll restart their careless and dangerous speeding activities as if nothing has happened.
So what's a better solution? Sensible people are saying put a speed camera at a strategic point. Great, except that I would say two cameras to give the morons no chance of speeding without penalty.
But there are two other effective things that could be done - first, reduce the speed limit to 20mph along the entire road and then relocate the police speed vehicle that frequents Heysham Road to South Road.
It should appear randomly as now in order to create uncertainty and the result would be a safe road without ludicrous 'closure trials'. And, of course, instant penalties for speeders who show a lack of concern for other road users.
Ray Thomas, Morecambe.
