A STUDENT obsessed with films has launched a travelling show -- giving people the chance to see 'the worst movie ever made'.
James Riley, 23, who recently completed an English degree course, has begun to travel around England, Scotland and Wales with his one-man cinema show.
The film-buff, of Roe Greave Road, Oswaldtwistle, shows a film -- usually a cult 1950s B-movie or a little-known kung-fu film -- and makes just enough money from the event to take him to the next location.
As part of the national tour, James will be stopping off at the Cellar Bar, King Street, Blackburn, for a showing of Plan 9 From Outer Space -- often described by experts as the worst film ever made.
James, who is currently taking a gap year, said: "I started reading about people doing these underground film shows in America and for a long time I was quite dissatisfied with the experience of going to the cinema, going to see the same films wherever you were.
"I went to Canada recently and it was the same experience as where I lived. I started thinking it was completely different from how it used to be.
So I set a few rules, that I would always show films in a different place so people would have to come and find it.
"Then I would always try to pick films to show that people would probably not have heard of, so it was completely different, and also that I would begin the shows with talks about the films."
The venues James picks for his shows are usually in a university lecture room, already fitted out with equipment including a screen.
But where necessary, including Blackburn, he brings his own digital projector and speakers.
Many of the shows include a talk, or a concert from a local band.
James often finds his films, which are often not for sale in mainstream shops, from film festivals or sales, on DVD or video.
In the coming weeks, James will be visiting Manchester, Cardiff, Bradford, London and Glasgow. The former student, who studied at Lancaster University, will arrive in Blackburn on March 17.
Black and white film Plan 9 From Outer Space features aliens hoping to take over the world by resurrecting the dead to kill off the living. Famed horror actor Bela Lugosi died of a heart-attack during filming.
James, who attended St Christopher's High School, Accrington, and St Mary's College, Blackburn, said: "It's a labour of love, really. I negotiate with people for my expenses, so it doesn't cost me anything.
"But the other idea is that it's an experiment for me.
"I am going all around the country, so the idea is to see if I can get around without paying anything."
