A RAMBLING group thought to be the oldest walking club in Lancashire is heading for a milestone.
Darwen's Spring Vale Rambling Class marks its 110th anniversary with an exhibition opening on Saturday.
The group's first season was in 1896 when former Darwen headmaster Jonathan Turton Fielding set off with ten walkers. Today, the club boasts more than 100 members.
Mr Fielding led the walkers on a ten-mile ramble from Spring Vale Methodist Church, over the moors to Entwistle.
The most significant change since then was in 1917 when women were admitted.
Member Tony Culverhouse said the club, now affiliated to the Ramblers Association, is even more popular than ever.
He said: "In this age of health awareness, the class is in a very strong position to offer a most enjoyable way of keeping fit. Walks are led by experienced leaders who are able to pass on their knowledge of the local history as well as facts on flora and fauna."
Club president Mike Counter said: "We offer something that people want in Darwen which is why we've lasted so long. About 30 people take part in each walk."
The exhibition, depicting the history of the group, is at Sunnyhurst Wood Visitor Centre and will be officially launched by the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillors David and Karimeh Foster at 1pm. It runs to the end of April.
Walks are on Saturdays and range from seven to 11 miles. Wednesday evening walks also take place in high summer.
