TWO colleges are getting together to look into becoming part of Morecambe regeneration.
St Martin's College and Lancaster and Morecambe College are carrying out feasibility studies to see whether they should develop new educational facilities in the West End.
Building Design Partnership, the consultants involved in the West End Masterplan, has already drawn up a brief for the feasibility study.
The initial vision in the brief involves building on existing strengths in both colleges in performance, fine and applied art, music, community development work, and new technologies.
Professor Pamela King, head of the school of culture, media and the environment at St Martin's, says: "At St Martin's we already offer many degree courses the arts, and are expanding into areas such as new media.
"A new building on our Lancaster campus will contain multi-media exhibition spaces which will be a community resource, and we are linking closely with developments at the Storey Institute.
"We await the results of the feasibility study to discover if the development of new educational facilities in Morecambe is viable.
"Both colleges are very positive about the opportunities, but we are in agreement that we cannot go ahead without assurance of the sustainability of any such major development."
