THE city council's budget meeting resulted in a 4.8 per cent in council tax being agreed - the lowest for six years.
Sadly, tough decision have been taken in order to prioritise what this area needs relating to service delivery from the council, so this budget will be a pathway towards services that are value for money. To stand still without the savings would have resulted in higher bills.
The Tory group failed to put forward any alternative budget proposals and did not even place any amendments despite having ample opportunity. This must signify that deep down they realise that tough and prudent management of the city's finances is requires in order to achieve a low council tax and provide best value.
Figures collated nationally show that Tory-controlled councils cost £200 per year more than Labour councils. Is this another reason why the Tories in Lancaster decided not to come up with an alternative budget?
It is true what they say - the Conservative Party cannot add up when it comes to discussing finance.
Cllr David Whittaker, Harbour ward.
