RETIRING police chief Ian Harrison is set to return to his local government roots.
After a career spanning more than 30 years, most of them in Leigh and Wigan borough, Chief Superintendent Harrison is taking charge of Wigan Council's Community Safety Team.
Maghull-born Ian began his working life at the old Ormskirk Urban District before joining Lancashire Constabulary then Greater Manchester Police in 1976.
In 2002 he was appointed Chief Superintendent of 'L' Division - which covers Leigh and Wigan - and has recently overseen its reorganisation.
He said: "Having served for over 31 years there will naturally be an element of sadness when I end what has been a stimulating and most rewarding career in the police service. However, I am excited about the new challenge and the opportunity to continue making a difference, working with partners to help to make the borough an even safer place."
Cllr Keith Cunliffe, Cabinet Member for Community Safety said: "Our Community Safety Team is working hard to improve the quality of life for local people and Ian has all the credentials to continue David Bowman's excellent work.
"Ian has spent most of his career serving communities in Wigan borough and I am delighted that he will be joining us. He has just the right blend of community safety experience and leadership skills to bring the best out of his team and our partners in the interests of the people of this borough."
