THE Bickershaw Colliery monument to the borough's mining past has come under the spotlight.
The famous wheel, once a working piece of pit head equipment at the Leigh pit, and which stands in the grounds of the Wigan campus of Wigan and Leigh College has been illuminated at night for all to see. It marks the 1857 college's contribution to the industry when, at its peak a century ago, it was famous across the world for its pioneering mining courses that attracted students from around the world. It also symbolises the roots of the college, formerly Wigan Mining and Technical College
To commemorate its status and as a symbol to the college's current generation of bright sparks the council's street scene team organised the light up and the college will now maintain it as part of a £29.5m development scheme at sites in Leigh and Wigan.
