AS a resident of Edgworth, and a supporter of the campaign against the proposed wind farm on Broadhead Road, I was dismayed by Mr Wordsworth's letter (March 11) advocating wind power.

Landowners can be paid £30,000 of taxpayer's money per wind turbine. The "green" electricity produced is subsidised by the taxpayer. And the taxpayer pays again when he pays his electricity bill.

I do not mind paying a little more for "green" electricity but I object to paying three times - with all the benefits going into shareholders pockets.

Wind turbines are not particularly efficient and the residents of Broadhead are often left without electricity for 24 hours and longer if the weather is very bad. Seeing these monstrosities from one's window merely adds insult to injury.

Personally I am greatly in favour of solar panels; they are environmentally-friendly, will save on fuel costs in the long term, and I am sure there is enough sun for them to be effective. I would rather subsidise the fitting of solar panels - especially in poorer households - than subsidise huge corporations.

Yes, Mr Wordsworth, we do need to make a huge effort to save the environment, but Edgworth says a very big "No" to windfarms.

A. WHITLOCK (Mrs), Edgworth.
