RADCLIFFE-based Euro MP Gary Titley has welcomed the news that delayed air passengers are now entitled to immediate compensation or alternative travel arrangements.
New Euro laws will give double-booked passengers between £175 and £420, paid on all flights operated by airlines based in an EU country, whether or not the flight starts from outside the EU. They will also cover budget airlines.
If cancellations are within the airline's control, compensation will be paid on the same basis as for denied boarding. Whatever the cause, a delay of five hours entitles passengers to a refund of their ticket (plus a flight back to the original point of departure if the journey is no longer worthwhile) or an alternative flight.
For delays and cancellations, airlines must provide meals and refreshments. If a delay results in an overnight stay, the airline must provide accommodation. Similar rules will be drawn up for international rail, ferry and coach journeys.
The rules were welcomed by Mr Titley, who said: "The compensation will act as a deterrent for airlines where over-booking and cancellations have become part of the normal business routine. The days of waiting helpless and frustrated in airport lounges are over."
