A PASSENGER became trapped in a LDV Convoy van when it collided with a stationary transit van in Lowton on Monday.
A 54-year-old man from Newton Heath had been driving his works transit van along the East Lancashire Road at 12.10pm when it broke down near to the junction of Stone Cross Lane.
The driver got out of the van and stood on a nearby grass verge and as he stood there he saw a red LDV Convoy van driven by a 38-year-old man from St Helens travelling in the same direction.
The van was then involved in a collision with the stationary vehicle which forced the Ford van onto the grass verge and up against some fencing.
The red van came to rest on the kerb and the carriageway.
A 30-year-old front seat passenger in the red van became trapped and had to be cut free by firefighters.
The man, also from St Helens, was taken to the Wigan Royal Albert and Edward Hospital where he was treated for serious head and facial injuries which were not believed to be life threatening.
The A580 Liverpool bound was closed for four hours following the collision.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact police on 0161 856 7273 or 7274.
