VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to help save a pensioners' club.

For over 40 years organiser and secretary of the Astley Luncheon Club, Joan Elsby, has helped to serve up hot meals and companionship for the elderly of Astley and Tyldesley.

But the continued 33 year success at Astley has not been without hitches and in recent times there have been a number of appeals for both new members and helpers to keep it running.

Once again Joan, who is in her eighties, is calling for helping hands to serve meals to the band of 25 who meet regularly on Wednesdays at the village's pensioners' centre on Manchester Road, Blackmoor.

She said: "We are getting a bit desperate. We will be down to two helpers soon and could really do with another couple of people who are willing to offer just two hours a week on a Wednesday lunchtime to keep the club rolling. All they have to do is turn up between 11.15am and 1.15pm and dish out meals to the members and help wash up afterwards.

"I am only the boss and organiser these days as I am unable to get about like to used to, but I would hate to see it fold after all these years."

'We would love more people to come and join us too. The food is not exactly Loyd Grosman, but anyone fed-up of dining alone should come along for some companionship. They'll be made very welcome. We don't just offer meals we also go out on trips and to the theatre and have a really good time."

Anyone willing to help can contact Joan on 883756.
