PRINCE Charles may not be marrying Camilla Parker Bowles until next Friday, but Bury Council has already announced an early wedding present for the happy couple!

A major art installation is to be commissioned in honour of the royal wedding and it could be erected in Kay Gardens before the end of the summer.

A spokesman for Bury Council said: "It was felt that this was a perfect opportunity to add to the growing number of sculptures and art installations that already exist in the borough, such as the Rusty Nails in Radcliffe and the Tilted Urn in Ramsbottom."

The commission for the royal artwork will shortly be put out to tender to a shortlist of sculptors and artists who have displayed vision and talent.

The council spokesman said: "We are not talking about a statue of Mrs Parker Bowles or anything like that. Statues are rather old-fashioned these days. We are looking for an innovative and striking art installation, something that reflects Mrs Parker Bowles' true personality and not the negative image that has been created by the tabloid press."

He said that initially, some sort of water feature was considered, but after the debacle of the "tacky and vulgar" fountain memorial to Diana in London's Hyde Park, this was ruled out.

"Mrs Parker Bowles is in a different league to Diana altogether, so it is only right that the installation should be tasteful and dignified," he said.

Mindful of budget constraints, the council has agreed that the sculpture will cost no more than £500,000 - the bulk of the money will most likely come from parking fines and a small increase in council tax.

The council spokesman said: "Given that this is something of great historic significance I am sure the good people of Bury will not begrudge the cost. In fact the town may benefit as the installation is sure to attract tourists."

When contacted by the Bury Times a spokesman for Clarence House said of the proposal: "Naturally, the Prince of Wales and Mrs Parker Bowles are appreciative of such ideas. It is a clear signal that people do indeed have great affection for the couple. Perhaps now, people will finally lay the memory of Diana Princess of Wales to rest and welcome in a new style and era of royalty that places duty, integrity and honesty above fashion and hairstyles."

Sadly, it is unlikely that the royal couple would attend the unveiling.

"They have very busy lives and are already committed to a high number of charity engagements and social events," said their spokesman.
