BURY Amateur Boxing Club boss Mike Jelley is turning his back on a lucrative windfall for his organisation in the wake of the news that Amir Khan's Mario Kindelan re-match has been given the green light writes Phil Thorp.

Co-organiser, professional boxing promoter Frank Warren, announced on Thursday afternoon that the legendary Cuban lightweight is prepared to take on Bury ABC's talented 18-year-old at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on Saturday, April 30, for what will be a third time.

The bout is to be screened live on ITV1 at peak time.

It has been widely publicised that the bout - expected to be Jelley protege Khan's final amateur fight - would be a fundraiser for the 70-year-old club.

But, Jelley, who has overseen Khan's development throughout his career, has decided that not one penny of the proceeds will go to the club his father Joe founded all those years ago, saying he'd rather the money go to charity.

He has already earmarked the NSPCC for a chunk of what is expected to be record takings for a Bury ABC event.

"I've read in the papers and seen on the TV that Bury ABC would be benefiting from the evening, but it just isn't true," he declared.

"As far as I am concerned I want all the money to go to selected charities, it's as simple as that, and it's the only reason I agreed to run this show.

"People are coming up to me saying we'll be the wealthiest amateur club in the country, it's just a load of nonsense.

"The event is going to be massive and a lot of money will be raised on the night, but I would feel better if it went to worthy causes."

"The NSPCC is one I'd like to benefit and I will get in touch with some others and, hopefully, they will be invited to the event."

The Khan-Kindelan bout is one of the most talked-about amateur fights for years, and Khan is confident of gaining revenge for his Olympic lightweight final defeat in Athens back in August.

On that occasion the Cuban defeated Khan 30-22, a much narrower margin than their first fight when the champion defeated Khan by a 33-13 margin in a pre-Olympic tournament a few months earlier.

That's what gives quick-learner Khan the confidence to think he can leave the amateur game with a notable scalp on his belt.

After the fight, the Bolton youngster is expected to sign a four-year deal with Warren and a contract is believed to be being scrutinised by Khan's legal team.

On his return from Athens Khan negotiated a £280,000 deal with the Amateur Boxing Association but his relationship with them has rapidly deteriorated, resulting in him walking out on the ABA championships last month in a ticket allocation row.

Double Olympic champion Kindelan is in Britain as part of a Cuban squad to face a Four Nations team at Liverpool Olympia on April 8.

ITV's Controller of Sport Mark Sharman said: "I'm delighted that ITV Sport are screening this one-off bout - it promises to be a great occasion which ITV1 will screen in prime time on Saturday night."

"Millions of viewers watched Amir's incredible performances at the Olympics last year and we think the nation wants to see a rematch between him and gold-medalist Kindelan on British soil."
