A FATHER-OF-TWO plans to throw himself out of a plane at 3,500 feet to raise cash for a £250,000 church roof appeal.
Robert Alcock, 37, of Coniston Drive, Darwen, was hoping to take part in a parachute jump in Whitchurch, Shropshire, on Saturday, but strong winds led to him having to postpone until this weekend.
The catering manager now hopes to take the plunge on Saturday for St Peter's C of E Church, Church Street.
The Rev Andrew Holliday launched the appeal in March to mend the leaking roof.
Since then various fundraising events have taken place including a spring fair at the church in May which raised £1,300 and a flower sale -- but there is still a long way to go.
An extensive refurbishment of the church's nave roof is needed as well as other projects such as painting the ceiling, the refurbishment and renewal of the windows and stained glass, and the redevelopment of the parish centre.
If Robert enjoys the parachute stunt, he is considering a free-fall plunge.
He said: "Once you've done five jumps you can do a free-fall jump from 12,000 feet on your own. After doing the jump on Saturday I might change my mind but I'd like to get sponsored to do the free-fall too to raise more money for the church.
"It's the first time I've done a parachute jump and I am quite excited.
"Hopefully more people will sponsor me because £250,000 is a lot of money for the church to have to raise.
"People think I am mad and can't believe I'm doing it."
Robert, who works for Bury-based Eurest Catering, will be supported on the day by his wife Joanne and two children Oliver, six, and Jessica, one.
Anyone wanting to sponsor him should ring 07742 489225 or email him at robert.alcock10@ntlworld.com.
