IN response to your articles and letters concerning the recent closure of the Post Office in Forbouys (June 10), I for one am glad to see the back of it.

The queues were horrendous. The worst days saw the line stretching to the doorway and a wait of half an hour or more.

The service from some of the staff was rude. There was no eye contact, no greeting, no conversation, and no parting comment.

In the real world, away from the protected jobs at the post office, customer is king. A firm thrives if it offers good, friendly service. The whining we hear is only from folk who like the convenience of a town centre office.

Let's stop the whingeing and see the lease offered to several local businesses for a shorter period of two years.

We would soon see what a bit of competition does to improve service.

I'm sure say, Asda, Boots, Marks and Spencer and the like would grab at the chance to run a post office counter on a commercial basis. They could offer their own products, set up impulse sweet racks and use the looping video for their ads (weren't the Post Office ones dull?).

Sales would improve too with increased footfall.

It won't happen though, will it? It's more likely that the Post Office in its infinite wisdom will buy back the Crompton Street buildings, pay a fortune to restore them and pass on the charges to their customers!
