REGARDING the recent publicity about a speed camera on Bolton Road, a camera will not tackle the many people who ignore our laws by way of licence, tax and MoT avoidance, or those who drive under the influence of drink or drugs.
Maybe there are other campaign options to be taken into account, to give some kind of preventative outcome, rather than lining the Government's pockets with wasted money that could be put to good use.
Options such as more money to fund policemen and women on our streets to catch the law breakers; prosecuting shopkeepers who illegally sell alcohol to under-age children, causing them to be a danger to themselves and others; teaching young children the dangers of any road; a more defined legal system to prosecute someone who has killed or injured with a car.
I have crossed Bolton Road all my life, long before the traffic calming measures were put in place. It is now safer for pedestrians to cross than ever before.
I hope I have taught my children how critical it is to be aware of traffic at all times of the day and night - including small back streets and busy main roads.
A speed camera might catch speeders, might stop some accidents, but it will not stop people from taking uncalculated, dangerous risks.
