NOMADIC bowlers will soon have a green they can call home.
Members of Sacred Heart Bowling Club at Hindley Green are celebrating the start of work on a new bowling green which is being constructed on land behind the Sacred Heart Parish Club off Swan Lane.
Mayor of Wigan Cllr Brian Jarvis joined Council colleague Cllr Stan Simmons and bowlers to launch the exciting new project which will provide sporting facilities for young and old alike.
Cllr Simmons said: "Crown green bowling could be on the school curriculum and experienced bowlers are willing to devote time to teach pupils the skills of the game.
"It is something for the benefit of the people and a pleasant change from bowling greens being turned into car parks or becoming development sites."
A Local Education Authority spokesman said: "If individual schools wanted to take crown green bowling on board it could be included in the school sports curriculum under 'Target Sports'.
"It's all about choosing sports that will be of interest to the pupils. Crown green bowling seems to be more popular with young people so the LEA would certainly want to encourage schools to try new and interesting sports."
