REPRESENTATIVES of Leigh branch of the Royal British Legion were in Southport to present a £35,000 cheque to Pam Crawford, manager of Byng House, the Legion's convalescence home for veterans.
"Byng House has all the facilities of a first class hotel and the Leigh branch has worked extremely hard to enable many veterans from Leigh, Lowton and Hindley to enjoy two week breaks in the resort," said branch president and welfare officer Jan Thomas.
The donation was part of the proceeds from the £90,000 sale four years ago of the Leigh RBL club in Windermere Road, the site of which is currently under redevelopment. The branch has also made a £10,000 donation to the Poppy Appeal.
Nowadays the branch meets in Leigh Conservative Club, Railway Road at 8pm on the first Tuesday of each month.
Ex-service personnel, or their widows, in need of advice can contact the service committee which meets on the same day and venue at 7.30pm.
