"ANXIOUS motorist" (Guide June 10) should not refer to selective parts of a conversation to give a false impression of my position.

Traffic congestion is a serious issue which is causing concern to many residents and traders in our area. There is no doubt that the situation has become worse in recent times.

It is for this reason I initiated a Traffic Summit in March with the local Authority, representatives of Area Boards and other local groups to discuss practical steps which can be taken to improve the situation.

It was agreed that there should be a review of the decision to allow Parking Bays along Bury New Road, a campaign to ensure local schools participate in a Government Funded home to school transport project and each of the three Area Boards would put the specific issue of traffic congestion on their agenda for serious discussion.

In addition, the Council's Highway Department informed the Summit that improved synchronisation of traffic signals is planned for this autumn.

I raised these issues again with the Council's leadership only last week and they agreed further action should be considered once we have seen the impact of the proposed changes.

With regard to Metrolink I have lobbied hard with fellow MPs and local Councillors to get the upgrade and expansion back on track.

An announcement on a replacement track, improvements to stations and the purchase of new trams is expected in the near future. I am also currently applying pressure regarding the availability and reliability of local bus services together with an expansion of existing plans for local park-and-ride provision.

Unlike some who sit on the sidelines and snipe I do not believe there are easy answers to traffic congestion. Our infrastructure was not built for the number of vehicles now on the road, our public transport system is not yet good enough, pedestrians and cyclists have needs, car park spaces created for shoppers are being filled by metrolink commuters, pollution damages health and contributes to global warming. Equally, we want to live in communities which are vibrant commercially and socially. Many of us remain wedded to our cars.

In the months and years ahead I will continue to work with my Councillor colleagues, residents and traders to try and make our community a better place. The regeneration of Radcliffe, a new Morrisons for Whitefield, a revamped precinct and improved shops, bars and restaurants in Prestwich are all needed and will be welcomed by the vast majority of local residents. Change will never be pain free or without anxiety and inconvenience. It would be dishonest and dishonourable to pretend otherwise.

I hope local people will contribute positively to the debate. My email address is: ivanlewis@burysouth.fsnet.co.uk
