I NOTE with sadness comments made by some residents of South Road, Morecambe.
At no time has anyone objecting to the closure of South Road made light of the legitimate concerns expressed following two tragic accidents.
Our over-riding concern has been the effect of the poorly thought through decision taken by the city and county councils to 'solve' the problem.
Those signing the original petition for action to be taken believed traffic calming meas-ures, cameras and other proven methods would be used to alleviate the problem. This has not been the case.
Road closures of this nature are not recommended by technical bodies because of the risk of creating rat runs on adjoining roads - precisely the reason residents of those roads objected.
I hope everyone involved can now agreee that we need to concentrate all our efforts on ensuring that both councils provide a solution which does not simply displace the problem but provides a solution to it.
The councils are aware from their own traffic survey data that traffic volumes and speeds on South Road, Burlington Road and Beaufort Road are similar. Moving the problem is not the answer.
