A FLOCK of penguins is slowly taking over the borough as people pick up the seabirds to raise money for Bury Hospice.

Everyone from across the borough, from businesses to children, are being invited to adopt the penguins, similar to the cows seen around Manchester, carefully handcrafted by sculpter Elsie McGill.

The Soroptimist International clubs of Bury and Ramsbottom came up with the unusual project during a brainstorming session on how to raise money for Bury Hospice.

Throughout the coming months, a variety of penguin-themed fundraising events are to be held to raise money for the Dumers Lane hospice, including a grand charity auction on March 23, 2006, and a black and white ball.

The birds, ranging from pocket size 10cm to one-metre high, can be customised to the owners specifications. Each penguin comes with its own certificate and they have already been picked up by Bury FC, painted in the club's football kit, and Automatic Lounge in Bury, decorated with names of all the drinks available.

More than 80 people attended the official launch of the Penguin Project at Automatic with the Mayor and Mayoress of Bury, Councillor Steve Treadgold and his wife Jean.
