FORMER Ipswich Town and Leicester City striker James Scowcroft is thought to be one of the next names on Steve Cotterill's hit list.
The 29-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving the Foxes this summer as part of a wages cull.
And I understand it, Cotterill, -who last week revealed he had not ruled out a swoop for another striker - could well have targeted the former England U21 international as one of two immediate targets.
Scowcroft began his career with Ipswich Town, where he made almost 250 appearances before joining Leicester for £3million in the summer of 2001.
The six-foot striker, who can also operate in a more withdrawn midfield role, played another 147 games for City before ending last season back on loan at Portman Road as cover for Blackburn Rovers-bound Shefki Kuqi.
Cotterill, who steadfastly keeps his targets a closely guarded secret, today revealed that he was standing by the phone waiting for news on two more summer targets.
However, Scowcroft would fit the bill of one player he described as having "a fair bit of experience".
Cotterill said: "I spoke to two players last weekend. I met one of them face-to-face yesterday and now I'm just awaiting a reply from him.
"I'm also waiting to find out when I am going to speak to the other player and until then, there is not a lot I can do but wait.
"One of them has a fair bit of experience and the other has very little, although his experiences so far are good.
"I've done a fair bit of groundwork on one of them, but circumstances have not allowed me to repeat that with the second player."
Meanwhile, the Clarets were today handed a home tie with Carlisle United in the Carling Cup.
The Clarets will entertain the Cumbrians at Turf Moor in the week commencing August 22 as they set out to emulate last year's thrilling cup run, which saw Premiership side Aston Villa put to the sword 3-1 in one of the highlights of the season.
United, managed by Paul Simpson, won their place back in the Football League by winning last year's Conference play-offs and are sure to bring a healthy following south for the first round clash, which must be decided on the night.
Burnley have also confirmed the opposition during their week-long training trip to Austria in a month's time.
The Clarets, who fly out following the prestigious friendly with Spanish La Liga side Malaga at Turf Moor on Saturday, July 23, first face Greek outfit PAOK Salonika - Nik Michopoulos's former club - on Tuesday, July 26.
The opening game will take place in either Abtenan or Annaberg, kicking off at 6.15pm.
Burnley, who had been trying to secure Czech opposition, then bring the trip to a close with a repeat of last season's friendly clash with German Bundesliga Two side Wacker Burghausen, who they drew 1-1 with last summer thanks to a goal from Graham Branch.
This year's game will take place on Saturday, July 30 at Bad Wimsbach (6pm KO).
