RECENTLY the Lancashire Evening Telegraph ran a story about asbestos dumping in a country lane and expressed dismay at such behaviour.
It is possible as a private individual to dispose of asbestos by obtaining special sacks or sheets of plastic from the council waste disposal centres and wrapping it securely, before disposing of it in a special skip.
Seems easy, but I have now attempted on four occasions over a three-week period to obtain such sheets from the council site at George Street West, Blackburn, only to be told by the attendants that they are out of stock and they are only allowed to re-order when they are low on supplies.
What is the point of the council spending vast amounts of money encouraging us to recycle waste and dispose of material properly, when we cannot actually do so because of poor organisation?
To add insult to injury I am told I am rationed to five sheets when stocks arrive, so will probably need to get a friend to order another five sheets, just to re-roof my garage.
It's hardly surprising that people dump material, faced with such obstacles, so come on Blackburn with Darwen Council, get your act together and allow us to act responsibly.
