THE art deco 'gateway' to Lancaster may soon have a new hat - in the shape of 100 two-bedroom apartments.

Architects have this week submitted a planning application on behalf of Worksharp (Lancaster) for flats up to nine storeys high above the former Kingsway bus depot, currently undergoing renovation.

Outline planning consent for the scheme has already been given.

Amanda Lord, of architects SMC Corstorphine and Wright Hills Erwin Ltd, says: "The design reflects a modern interpretation of art deco utilising a white curved facade and decorative fins, reflecting something of the distinctive character found in local art deco buildings such as the Midland Hotel."

And Tony Hills, of the Lancaster branch of the company, says: "It's very exciting. The idea is that the whole development of Kingsway will be a landmark and act as a gateway into Lancaster."

The first phase of the development, including a PC World store and the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Bridge Houses, is now under construction.
