A MOTHER-OF-TWO from Prestwich is in intensive care after being injured in a collision with a tram in Manchester city centre.

Mrs Jane Black, of Clifton Road, suffered a broken pelvis and is seriously ill in Trafford General Hospital following the incident in Victoria Railway Station on Saturday afternoon.

Her husband Mark Sankey and their two daughters Elena (14) and Maya (12) are hoping she will make a full recovery from her injuries although she has barely been conscious since the accident.

Mr Sankey said: "Jane is still in intensive care and she is only just coming round. I did speak to her briefly just after the accident but I haven't been able to establish exactly what happened. She hasn't been able to speak since.

"It was touch and go on Saturday night, but she seems to be over the worst. We are all very worried and still trying to come to terms with what has happened."

Mrs Black (51), who works for Manchester City Council, had driven into the city centre on Saturday to do some shopping prior to watching a concert that evening.

Leaving her car parked at the MEN Arena car park, Mrs Black planned to return home by tram and travel back to the venue later that evening with Mark.

He said: "Jane had done a bit of shopping and had just been to the hairdresser to have her hair done and was going to catch the tram back to Prestwich.

"We were both going to see Crosby, Stills and Nash at the MEN Arena and drive back home in the car."

Mr Sankey was at home watching tennis at around 4.40pm when he received a call from the police informing him of the incident.

He arrived at the station in time to see paramedics putting Jane on a stretcher before taking her initially to Manchester Royal Infirmary.

She was later transfered to Trafford General Hospital where her condition is described as poorly but stable.

He said: "When I first got the call I was told she had been hit by a tram but was okay so I didn't know what to expect. It turned out to be more and more serious and there was a serious risk on Saturday night. We have been told that she should recover but it will take some months."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident just before 4.40pm to contact them on 0161 856 3835.
