MATTHEW Cuyes caused a real upset in the Slazenger East Lancs Tennis League Individual finals when he became one of the youngest ever winners of the senior title.

The 14-year-old from Whalley Tennis Club beat former champion, Chris Sutton, in straight sets, claiming a stunning 6-4, 7-5 victory over the experienced Crosshill's player.

Cuyes' youthful exuberance proved to be too much for Sutton who was favourite to win the title for the second time.

But the Whalley youngster had other ideas and, despite a spirited fight-back by Sutton in the second set, he clinched a memorable victory.

The age of the new champion hit home as Cuyes also retained the Under 16s title -- but only after being pushed all the way by Ben Allan of Crow Wood Leisure.

The showdown was a re-run of last year's final and Cuyes had to use all of his skills to win for the second year running.

Cuyes, who last year won the Under 13s and Under 16s junior titles, came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

While it was a day of double delight for Cuyes, it was the complete opposite for Sutton who also lost in the final of the men's doubles.

Sutton and club-mate, Andrew Holden, went down 6-2, 6-4 to Blackburn Northern pair, Ian Broughton and John Waddicor.

In the ladies competition, Mary Brass of Clitheroe retained her singles crown with a hard fought three set victory over Cathy Green, coming from behind to win 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.

But those exertions took their toll as she could not add the mixed doubles titles as she partnered Clitheroe team-mate Stephen Py in defeat against Graeme Clark and Julie Bannister of Park Wood who won 6-1, 6-4.

Blackburn Northern picked up their second doubles success of the day when Eileen Hext and Helen Walton beat Vicky Taylor and Chris Baron of Towneleyin straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-4.

In the junior girls, Emma Calvert and Francis Winder contested the finals of both the Under 13s and Under 16s with Calvert coming out on top on both occasions.

In the Under 13s final, Calvert of Clitheroe beat Winder 6-0, 6-2 and then secured another straight sets victory over the Towneley player in the Under 16s final, winning 6-3, 6-0.

And Aiden Tate gave host club Burnley something to cheer about when he beat Stephen Moat of Towneley 6-3, 7-5 in the Under 13s final.
