NEW Leigh RMI boss Andy Nelson has the first chance to look at his newly-assembled side when they take on Queen of the South in their first pre-season friendly at Hilton Park on Saturday.

The former coach of the reserves picked up the reins last month when Steve Bleasdale for Peterborough, and has quickly put a new-look squad of players together.

The Railwaymen will play their first season in the Conference North following relegation with a much-changed squad.

Only Andy Roscoe and Gareth Stoker, who is suffering from a recurring knee problem, remain of the senior players from last season, but Nelson is optimistic he can quickly mould together a side on a small budget.

"We have lots of talented young players who I am confident can come in and do a good job," he said. "But I need a couple of experienced players alongside them. We've put together a first team squad of 22 players with 15-18 in the reserves.

"We would like to do well in our first couple of friendlies but I need to use the games to try out a few permutations and I need to experiment."

Former leading goalscorer David McNiven will be in action for the visitors, while RMI will have several new signings on show.

They include Chris McDonough from Woodley and Rob Morton from Stalybridge, former Manchester City midfielder Ryan McDowell, Carl Galloway, who has played for Tranmere, Chorley's Gavin Lee-Ellison and defender Tony Dunne.
