BLACKBURN People's Choir has returned from a week's visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, where they sang for the country's president.

The visit saw 41 members of the choir sing in Kyrenia, where they sang for Mehmet Ali Talat at their fundraising concert in Nicosia's Ataturk Cultural Museum.

The choir members raised more than £3,000 during their stay, and some of the money going to the SOS Children's Village in Nicosia.

Musical director Jeff Borradaile said: "We definitely need to go back, The First Lady and the audience sang a Turkish song for us, sent us the music, and made us promise to learn it."

Choir secretary Ann Parker said: "This was a fantastic trip. Far more exciting than we expected.

"It was a great honour to meet the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and we were all greeted with great warmth and hospitality."
