PENDLE Council is asking people to think carefully before buying dogs as Christmas presents.

Laura Robinson, one of the borough’s dog welfare officers, said: “Looking after a dog properly takes up a lot of time and costs money.

“And although they are cute when they are little, people need to remember that puppies grow into big dogs that need a lot of care and attention.”

The average price for looking after a dog is around £680 per year and in 2009 the council saw an increase in people signing their dogs over to the authority.

Council leader John David, a dog owner himself, said: “All dogs need looking after correctly.

“If you are thinking of getting a dog, please make your decision responsibly. Puppies will not be puppies forever.

“Responsible dog owners make sure that the basic needs of their dog are met, such as food, water, attention, veterinary care and daily walks. If you have any doubts, then please don’t get a dog.”
