A WELL-known route to Burnley’s Turf Moor ground should be revamped so it gives a better impression to visiting supporters, a senior councillor claims.

Work which has taken place across the borough under the Elevate housing renewal programme is urgently needed for “dilapidated” sections of Belvedere Road, in Bank Hall, said Coun Julie Cooper.

But the road leading to the football ground, used mainly by home supporters, might miss out because it is not a priority area.

Coun Cooper said: “I know we are not awash with funding.

“But there a serious number of people who are coming down this road to attend Burnley matches and this is one of the first impressions they are getting of our town.

“The whole of Belvedere Road is in need of a facelift.”

The recent launch of ‘Brand Burnley’ has seen hoardings erected at the Gannow Top roundabout, masking the former Derby Hotel and promoting the town as a ‘Premier League venue’, and another is planned for the top of Trafalgar Street.

Elevate housing boss Michael Wellock said: “Belvedere Road falls outside our priority areas in terms of what money we have available for facelifting works.

"We have used housing capital grant money for that.

“The honest thing to say is that, like lots of public spending, we only have so much money available.”
