BUDDING actors will be flying through the air to bring a much loved fairy tale to life.

Students in Westholme School’s musical adaptation of Peter Pan will don wired ariel harnesses to bring iconic scenes from the story to life during the production.

And with help from Liverpool based Wired Aerial Theatre the audience is treated to a spectacular fight scene between Peter Pan and Captain Hook choreographed the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company actor, Nick Asbury.

Former student and French teacher Emma Holmes composed the music and the show is directed by the school’s head of music Catherine Roberts.

The pair were then backed by senior bosses to let the story about the boy who could fly, fly.

After just three days of training students who play Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, Wendy, John and Michael were flying, fighting and doing backflips in preparation for the Christmas show which begin tonight(thurs) for four shows.

Megan Copper, 18, who plays Peter Pan, said: “It is quite a strange experience. You have to use your muscles to keep up right. But it’s so enjoyable. There’s been a few times in the fight scene where we’ve nearly punched each other and during the rehearsal when we were saying goodbye we ended up with my bum facing the audience.”

Fiona Porritt, 17, who plays Captain Hook said: “You get such an adrenaline rush. There are five harnesses and there’s one person controlling them all.“This is the first time our school has done this and it’s really enjoyable.”

Eleanor Lynch, 15, who plays Tinkerbell, said: “At first it’s a strange sensation flying, it’s hard work and your back aches afterwards but it’s worth it.

“During the dress rehearsal everyone in the audience was so amazed.”

Catherine Roberts, head of drama, said: “This is a first for us, in past productions we have had revolving stages but never anything like this.

“The Wired Aerial Theatre were really amazed with the pupils during the training. The children have loved it.”
