A BAR worker has died after falling down the cellar stairs at a Blackburn nightspot.

Mum-of-one Caroline Greenhalgh, 35, was found injured at Baroque Bar, Northgate, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate Ms Greenhalgh, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched a joint investigation into the incident, which happened around 2.15am.

The tragic events unfolded towards the end of the Baroque Bar’s soul night, as Ms Greenhalgh was working on the bar.

It is understood Ms Greenhalgh, the daughter of the licensee Jackie Hall’s partner, had been in a back room away from the public area, when she somehow fell into the cellar.

A family statement, issued through the police, asked to be left alone to come to terms with the weekend’s tragic events.

It said: “We have been left devastated and are too upset to talk about Caroline at this time.”

The Baroque Bar was closed on Sunday, but was re-opened to the public on Monday.

Police were called to the scene by the North West Ambulance Service.

Detective Sergeant Mark Haworth Oates said: “At this stage, it is unclear why Caroline fell down the stairs but a joint investigation between the police and Health and Safety Executive is being carried out.

"It appears to be a tragic accident."

Allan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "An investigation has been launched into this tragic incident.

"We send our sincere condolences to the family.”
