work is under way on a £285,000 scheme to transform a Rossendale church into a multi-purpose community centre.
Builders have begun work at St Anne’s Church, in Edgeside, which will see the creation of a stage for musical, dance and drama productions.
The transformation, which includes a range of modifications, is being made possible after the project secured £284,209 of Lottery funding.
The Rev Rod Bevan, from the church, hailed the development as ‘exciting’ and said they hope to unveil the facility early next year.
Local contractor BE Boys Ltd is now on site. Pews have been removed, eventually to be replaced by chairs.
A new under floor heating system will be introduced, along with a range of environmental measures to reduce the church’s carbon footprint.
The existing nave will be converted into a main auditorium, with a suite of rooms at the west end of the building.
A staged area at the front of the auditorium will make it possible for performance of drama, dance and music.
And a new kitchen, meeting room, toilets, office and store will allow the facility to cater for the needs of everyone who uses the building.
The work follows three years of consultations with the architects Anthony Grimshaw Associates to retain the character of the church.
It is being made possible by money from the Big Lottery Fund Community Buildings Programme.
A number of partner organisations have already indicated that they would use the building.
Mr Bevan said: “This is an exciting time.”
