PLANS are under way to bring wacky races to Darwen next year.
In a move aimed at encouraging thousands of people into the town, For Darwen councillor Phil Jones has set about organising a pedal car ‘grand prix’.
The idea is that schools and community groups would build their own pedal car to standard specifications, and race around a town centre route to win prizes.
Other similar events already attract bustling crowds in places like Devon and Bournemouth.
Coun Jones said: “The whole idea came from when I went to see the Great Harwood pram race.
“The whole town came out to take part and there was an amazing atmosphere.
“I want something similar for Darwen, but didn’t want to suggest the same thing. We’d try to organise it for the end of July next year to tag on to the end of Darwen Live. This way there will be something going on throughout the summer.
“Teams would probably consist of four people who would take turns doing laps. The emphasis would be on fun, even though it’s a competition, and it would also be connected with the drive to encourage recyling and health and fitness.”
The proposed route would run around the Three Day Market, to the back of Boots, and back into the bus terminal.
For Darwen party leader Tony Melia said it would be “a very typical British fun day”.
