DOZENS of “dangerous” potholes in a Pendle town are still waiting to be filled in despite being marked six months ago.
According to Barnoldswick town councillor Jenny Purcell, contractors working on behalf of Lancashire County Council, sprayed some of the divots with paint last year, but they have yet to be filled in and grass and weeds are now sprouting in them.
The “deep” potholes in pavements and roads, pose hazards for pedestrians and motorists, but also detract from the town’s image, Mrs Purcell said.
County Hall chiefs conceded there can be delays in filling in the holes, but re-assured residents, saying they will be repaired.
The potholes, some of which are a foot deep, can be seen in Brogden Lane to Gisburn Road and Church Street, in the town centre.
Some of the largest divots which have been marked by workmen are located in Brogden View, close to the town’s ambulance station.
Mrs Purcell said: “The holes are deep - it looks like a bomb has been dropped in some places.
“It’s absolutely disgusting. A lot of money has been spent on making it really nice, but outside the road looks terrible.”
Workers from Capita, a civil service partner, were employed by the county council to mark the potholes.
Brian Eagle, Lancashire County Council’s highway maintenance manager, said: “We employ Capita to carry out countywide highway inspections that are needed to keep the highway network safe as required by law.
“We believe that investing £400,000 a year in these inspections saves the county council up to £4million a year in potential insurance claims.
“Any potholes or highway defects found during the inspection are marked so that our contractors can carry out repairs. We appreciate that there can occasionally be delays in carrying out the work, but no marked defect should be left untreated.”
