A CONTROVERSIAL Rossendale children’s home which generated more than 100 complaints has now officially closed its doors for good.

Police said Brighton House, in Waterfoot, has now shut after being threatened with forced closure under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act.

Police said youngsters from the home, in Miller Barn Lane, have been responsible for more than 166 incidents in the past year.

They hailed the move a triumph for them and members of the community and they now expect a reduction in the number of crimes.

New Beginnings Therapeutic Services had run the care home.

Earlier this year Rossendale Council refused retrospective planning permission for the children’s home after hearing that residents had been assaulted, shopkeepers initimidated and property damaged.

Insp Neil Wilkinson, of Rossendale Police, said: “Brighton House Children’s Home voluntarily closed its doors.

“However, had it not we would have continued to pursue an Anti-Social Behaviour Closure Order.

“We believe pressure from the police and the local community has forced the closure and we are pleased that local residents will now have some respite.

“I hope this case helps to reassure the community that we are listening to them and working with them to resolve local issues.

“I also hope it sends a clear message to other privately-run homes, that they have responsibilities to live up to and if they fail to live up to those responsibilities we will pursue them using all means available.

“Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in our local communities.

“Working with local residents and other partner agencies, we will take action.”
