THE dangers of swimming in open water are to be highlighted as part of a water safety campaign in East Lancashire.
Police officers have teamed up with Lancashire Fire and Rescue and Blackburn with Darwen Council to launch the campaign at the Blue Lagoon Reservoir, Belmont.
Pupils from Belmont Primary School will watch a staged rescue by the fire service and officers will speak to children about the importance of staying safe around open water.
Sergeant Jon Cisco said: “It is vital that we do everything possible to raise awareness of the dangers associated with swimming in open water, particularly during the summer months and I hope this campaign serves as a reminder to everyone.
“Local reservoirs can appear very inviting, particularly when the weather is hot, but the reality is very different and entering into this water could have tragic consequences.
“I urge everyone to act sensibly and stay safe, particularly if drinking alcohol beside local streams or reservoirs.
“Our advice is to avoid swimming when under the influence of alcohol as it can reduce the body temperature and cause cramps.”
Coun Michael Law-Riding added: “We are keen to reinforce this message and encourage all of our families and young people to be careful near water.”
Police have issued the following summer safety water advice:
- Keep clear of any cliff edges as they can be slippery when they get wet and sometimes give way under foot.
- Local reservoirs can appear very inviting, particularly when the weather is hot.
The reality is very different and entering into this water could have tragic consequences.
- Drinking alcohol and going in any open water is dangerous.
It slows your reactions, increases chances of hypothermia and your judgment of distance will be impaired.
