THE mother of a young woman kicked to death because of what she was wearing is due to meet a top Tory politician to discuss policies to cut street crime.
Sylvia Lancaster’s daughter, Sophie, 20, was stamped on and kicked in the head after a drunken gang of teenagers, branded “feral thugs” by a judge, turned on her and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, in August 2007.
The couple were savagely attacked because they wore distinctive dark clothing, typical of goths.
Gap-year student Sophie died in hospital and her boyfriend suffered permanent physical and psychological damage.
Sophie’s mum, Sylvia, from Rawtenstall, will meet Shadow Schools Minister Michael Gove at his office in the Houses of Parliament to discuss how to mend what the Tories call “Broken Britain”.
Since Sophie’s murder, Mrs Lancaster has founded SOPHIE (Stamp Out Prejudice Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere) has been working with schools and politicians to spread a message of tolerance.
She wants a change in the law to mean attacks on someone because of their “alternative” appearance, such as goths, will be designated a hate crime and attract tougher sentences.
