HAND-HELD ultra-violet lights were handed out in Darwen after forged £20 notes were found circulating in the town.
Police said the lights, which are worn on a chain around the neck, could instantly check whether a bank note, a credit or debit card or a driving licence is real.
PC Simon Harwood said they had been given out to bar staff at licensed premises to prevent fake notes floating around the town and also to catch those responsible.
PC Harwood, Community beat manager of the town centre team, said they handed the gadgets out over the weekend after they were contacted by shops in the town centre and licensed premises about the notes.
He said: “Anyone thinking of using fake £20 notes in licensed premises in Darwen are not going to get away with it.
“We are advising everyone to check £20 notes.
“We are looking to extend this initiative to Darwen area stall holders and possibly shops.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact them on 0845 1 25 35 45.
