PLANS have been lodged with Rossendale Council to protect a former Airtours car park at Helmshore from travellers and fly-tippers.
Metal barriers have already been erected around the site on Park Road which is no longer owned by the travel giant.
Problems occurred six years ago when travellers moved on to another former Airtours site, in Holcombe Road.
Applicant Mr D Ainsworth, of nearby Hill End Farm, is keen to ensure there is no repeat.
A spokesman for development agents Hartley Planning says in a report to councillors: “The applicant was concerned that an unsecured site could result in travellers or gipsies taking up residence."
The red and white barrier only needs planning permission because it is 1.1metre high - if it was 10cm consent would not be needed.
“This application does not cause harm to amenity or highway safety and secures the site, particularly at night.”
