A TEENAGER has been playing football in pink in honour of his mum’s battle with breast cancer.

Mount Carmel High School pupil Daniel Aaron, 15, has been raising awareness with his unusual goalie’s kit since the beginning of the season.

The idea came to him after his mum Caroline raised tens of thousands of pounds for breast cancer after beating the illness two years ago.

As well as hosting her own fundraisers, the 42-year-old also founded the Breast Cancer Campaign’s Manchester group, and is hoping to start a group in and around Accrington.

Daniel also raised £2,000 in October by persuading his entire school — both boys and girls, to wear something pink for the day and donate a pound each.

His parents Caroline and Phil, who live in Scott Avenue, Baxenden, with Daniel and their eldest son Oliver, 18, said they were “incredibly proud”.

Phil, 44, who is also the football team’s manager said: “Wearing pink to play football is one hell of a brave thing to do at that age.

“When his mum was first diagnosed three years ago, he was a bit young to understand what it was all about but recently he’s been thinking about it more and more.

“Throughout Caroline’s treatment both Daniel and Oliver were fantastic.

"They both helped in lots of different ways. You couldn’t ask for better kids..”

Daniel said: “I thought I would get a lot of stick at first, but I haven’t had any.”

Caroline said she had no idea of the plan until her son and husband had the shirt ready to show her.

She said: “It was a brilliant surprise and I was very proud of him.”

Daniel is not alone wearing pink. Juven-tus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is also famous for wearing the colour.
