ST Barnabas Primary School, in Knowlesley Road, Darwen, has applied for planning permission to extend the infant classroom and install a covered play area.
The application states that the current infant classroom is too small to comply to education requirements and a 21-metre- square extension is needed – using up redundant external space.
It is said that extending the classroom and remodelling the layout of others would allow for a better flow of pupils throughout the school.
With remodelling, all of the classrooms would be 60 metres square with the infant classroom being 65 metres square.
In an Ofsted inspection of the school last year, it was highlighted that the school lacked an outdoor covered play area.
To address this issue, the school has also applied for permission to erect a powder-coated steel canopy with a polycarbonate sheet roof which would allow daylight into the classroom as well as providing cover.
