AN established nightclub has fallen victim to the turbulent financial climate.
The Rhythm Station, Rawtenstall, has gone into receivership due to economical difficulties.
The club, which is renowned for its live music, has built up a sizable jazz following over the last 11 years.
But its owner, Alan Greenhalgh, said he had no choice but to close after a fall in takings.
Mr Greenhalgh said: “The takings have been abysmal over the last 12 months, so I decided to call it a day.
“We’re lucky because we have no bank debts like other clubs, but I knew it was time to close.
“My main reason for keeping the club open was for the jazz club which I will still be supporting in a new venue.”
Despite the closure of the club, the weekly jazz night will continue at St Mary’s Chambers.
Denis Dundon, the jazz night promoter, said: “It’s no secret that the club has been losing money over recent times but the choice that was made to go into receivership had nothing to do with the jazz night.
“Our members list is very good and I am sure we’ll keep all the regulars at the new venue as well as attracting new crowds.”
Councillors said they were surprised by the club’s closure and called for more investment in local businesses.
Coun Jim Pilling said: “If the council don’t commit to investing in local businesses in the valley, we will see more things like this happening.
“It’s a sad state of affairs to see such a good venue for live music closing down.
“Now is the time we need to get behind local businesses before more and more trade in Rawtenstall goes downhill.”
The next jazz night will be held at the new venue on Wednesday, December, 10 at 8.30pm.
