A CLITHEROE Grammar School student was left scarred after being glassed in a celebration to mark the end of term, a court heard.
The victim, Alexander Newton, initially went to shake the hand of Miles Fullalove, who pushed him away, the court heard.
When Mr Newton went back towards him, Fullalove struck out and the glass broke when it caught the sixth former’s face, causing two cuts that needed specialist treatment.
Fullalove, 19, of Twitter Lane, Bashall Eaves, was given eight months imprisonment, suspended for a year, with 100 hours unpaid work.
He will also pay £750 compensation. He had pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding.
As the hearing began at Preston Crown Court, Judge Anthony Russell QC said he was very concerned, having read an impact statement from the victim.
The offence dated back to May 23, when Mr Newton, a student at Clitheroe Grammar School, was celebrating the end of term for the sixth form, and had gone to the Castle pub, Clitheroe, that evening.
The attack was sparked when Fullalove refused to shake Mr Newton’s hand when they met.
Mr Newton was referred for specialist treatment.
He had a scar extending from above one eyebrow, across the bridge of his nose and into the left eyebrow.
Fullalove had no previous convictions.
Mark Stuart, defending, said the teenager did not seek to minimise his offence or excuse his behaviour.
Mr Stuart told the court: “There is every reason to believe he will never be in trouble again.
"He can’t apologise enough."
